Why Break the Cycle?
When the cycle is not broken, various patterns of violence and dysfunction (rooted in power and control) often escalate to increased levels of harm and are passed down from one generation to the next. When the cycle is broken, we prevent escalated harm for ourselves and for our children, and we contribute to the greater safety and well-being of our communities.
How can I break the cycle?
The only way to break the cycle is to establish healthier boundaries, healthier strategies for communicating those boundaries, and the ability to uphold them for ourselves when we know we should. Learning how to live a life free of violence requires consistent support, guidance and self-determination. We can help! Ask an advocate today.
HEART is a transformative, 12-step domestic violence prevention course. It requires participants to reflect on their journeys, identify patterns of violence or dysfunction, build confidence and self-esteem, and establish healthier boundaries for themselves and others. Participants learn to uphold their boundaries in ways that promote kind, productive communication rather than violent communication styles or violent behavior patterns.
The Protective Parenting Program is a 12-session violence prevention course that acknowledges the plethora of harmful effects on children, caused by exposure to violence. It also equips survivors with developmentally appropriate skills for overcoming those effects. The parenting program compliments the HEART program, as it requires parents to model for their children the healthier boundaries they work to establish; as well as skills for self-regulation, problem solving and appropriate consequences.
Our Heart and Parenting Programs are approved by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
